The Curious Case of Victor Saponari

The Forgotten Dismissee

Over the past day plus we've talked at length about the bomb that Jackie Parker dropped on Terrier Nation when he dismissed a pair of Saponaris and suspended a Trivino.  For obvious reasons, the main point of discussion has been the booting of Vinny Sap.  Vinny was a rising star not just at BU, but was beginning to make a name for himself across the nation for his flashy goals.  His outright dismissal from the team will clearly have a bigger long-term impact than either Victor's dismissal or Corey's suspension.

An interesting point we have barely touched on here is Victor getting kicked off the team.  As far as we know, the only incident that the elder Saponari brother was involved in was drinking with several of his mates on St. Patty's day.  Trivino did that, and made an awful rap about being a puckstar, and he'll still be playing in November.

So why is Victor gone?  Did he and Vinny do something really dumb beyond what we already know about?  Or maybe he really just "displayed conduct unbecoming of a Boston University hockey player" like Parker said.   Or maybe there's another element that everybody is thinking, but nobody really wants to say.
From the beginning of Victor's career, I have joked with fellow BU fans about Terrier recruiting.  Even in the past 3 years there have been two players that seemed to be there for one reason.  To make sure their brothers came to BU.

One of these cases was Kevin Gilroy.  When Matty Ice was rising from Junior to Senior at BU, the Terriers brought in his younger brother Kevin.  The first thought was that perhaps Kevin would be another hockey prodigy just like his brother, and that the Terriers had struck a Gilroy Gold Mine.  However, through two full seasons, Kevin has only found his way into 37 games.  It certainly began to appear as if he was there only as an extra motivation to keep Matt around for his senior year.

Matt and Kevin Gilroy After the Championship Game

This isn't a knock at all on Kevin Gilroy.  He skates hard, and in the ice time he's got, he has actually played pretty well.  He clearly has some talent, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move into a more regular role in his upcoming junior season.  But when you compare him to some of the other recruits in his class, such as Chris Connolly, Vinny Sap and Trivino, you see that he is not thought to be on the same level as those guys.  It simply seems as if there was another reason he was here.

A similar situation went down with Victor Saponari.  Victor came to BU in 2007-2008, and since then he has played in just 14 games.  But in December of his freshman season, fans got their first taste of what the Saponaris were capable of.  BU hosted an exhibition game against the USA-18 team featuring none other than Victor's brother Vinny.  The Saponari brothers each scored a goal for their respective teams, and it seemed as if there could be a long Saponari regime at Agganis.

But Victor's goal in that game didn't even officially count, and since then he's only played in 12 games for the Terriers.  Vinny came to BU, showed promise as a freshman and shined as a sophomore, and once again it became clear that Victor had been brought to BU as a means to land an even greater prize, his brother.

Now that his brother has been shipped out of town, and has made the program look bad, is it possible that Parker and Co. simply did not want to waste a roster spot, a partial scholarship and their time on a guy who was there mainly to lure his brother to the school?

If Victor really was brought here only as a means to grab Vinny, then why bother keeping him around to play just 5 games per year?  This point would only be accentuated if Victory also happened to have a negative attitude that took away from what Parker was trying to do.

This is all speculation on my part, but it seems to be a fairly logical point.  Feel free to let me know why I'm wrong.

Victor sap was an arrogant prick, lived on the same floor as him at BU. Always looking to pick a fight and flaunt his (lack of) hockey talent. I’m assuming he continued this inside and outside of the dorm, just as on and off the ice.
