Hockey East Roundup: Friday, October 23

Merrimack Headlines Big Night of Conference Play

Six teams played Hockey East games tonight, and none came out feeling better than perennial bottom-dweller Merrimack College.

Mack fought hard with Vermont into the second, trading goals with the seventh ranked team in the nation.  5:58 into the second, Mack jumped ahead 3-2 on a Chris Barton tally on the power play and never looked back.  The Warriors ended up winning the game 5-2 in the latest upset of this young season.  They now somehow sit at 3-2-0 while UVM falls to 2-2-0.

UMass Amherst also continued their hot start with a 5-3 win over the Black Bears of Maine.  All-American James Marcou had a goal and three assists in the victory.  The Minutemen move to 3-0-0 and 2-0-0 in Hockey East Play.

The final conference game of the night was a match-up between New Hampshire and Northeastern U.  No surprise here as the Wildcats took down the Huskies 4-2 on their home ice in a game that was televised on NESN.

Non-conference play featured UMass Lowell defeating Colgate 5-3, Providence taking down Bowling Green 8-2 and Boston College defeating Notre Dame 3-2.
