Since we do pledge to cover "Anything Else Relevant in the World of Sports" in our site's banner, I feel we'd be remiss if we did not mention the New York Jets' stunning upset win over the Chargers in San Diego.
I knew the Jets would keep it closer than most people were saying they would, but I had no idea they could actually pull it off.
Rookie Head Coach, Rookie Quarterback, Rookie Running Back, Second Year Tight End. AFC Title game.
Check out the highlights with the Radio Broadcast Calls from the hometown announcers, because that's the only way to truly feel the game as it should be felt.
A few thoughts on the game after the jump.
The Jets defense is a truly talented group, and they shined bright last night. And when you talk about the Jets D, you have to start with Darrelle Revis.
-- A week after making his good friend Chad Johnson Ochocinco cry, Revis had a lot of Chargers' fans crying last night. Revis was everywhere. He blew up LT in the backfield. He knocked away passes he had no business getting to. He made a circus INT on a receiver who was apparently uncoverable. He made Phillip Rivers look like....well, like Mark Sanchez.
Revis is without a doubt the best cornerback in football. He is a difference maker, and the sooner opposing quarterbacks learn that you can't throw in his direction, the better off they will be. He'll most likely do less bouncing around against Indy, instead spending most of his time matching up one on one with Reggie Wayne.
-- Elsewhere on defense, the Jets linebackers are men among boys. Bart Scott and David Harris are just good solid linebackers who never seem to miss a tackle. They're on the spot when they need to be, and they absolutely stuffed Tomlinson and Sproles last night.
Jim Leonard is also a ball hog. He always seems to be involved when a big play is to be made. Causing and recovering a fumble, picking off Rivers, nearly getting to a botched snap over Rivers' head, and making big tackles all day long.
-- How about Sexy Rexy Ryan. Ryan and his coaching staff are playing to this team's strengths to perfection. They know what will make this team successful, and they have figured out exactly how to maximize their young QB's production. The play calling could use a bit more variation, and they may need to change it up a bit to keep a tough Indy defense on their heels.
-- The Sanchize. Oh the Sanchize. Mark has finally figured out exactly what his role is on this team. He doesn't need to throw the ball all over the yard on this team. He doesn't need to stretch the field. He doesn't even need to throw the ball 25 times. He needs to control the ball and make sure his backs get plenty of touches, and he needs to make efficient plays on third down.
Sanchez Has Limited His Pass Attempts and his Mistakes In Recent Weeks
He has been doing that over the past few weeks. It hasn't been anything spectacular, and it hasn't always been pretty, but it has been more than enough to get the job done. That being said, he may need to do a little bit more to beat Peyton Manning next week.
-- Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones are an improbable but effective one-two punch. The rookie and the vet, lightning and thunder. Running back by committee is the way the league is these days, but back at the beginning of the year, very few Jets fans thought Greene would be getting any carries at all, nevermind the majority of them. A horrific injury to Leon Washington opened the door for the explosive rookie, who has not disappointed. Give credit to the offensive line for making every halfback look great, but give credit to the guys carrying the ball, especially when one of them seems to bust a 40 yard touchdown run every week.
-- The Chargers. What happened to the Chargers? Their run game was non-existent, Rivers looked panicked whenever pressure came near him and the defensive line barely had any push that could have knocked Sanchez off balance. They lacked focus, and they consistently took bad penalties that put them in a hole. I don't buy that a week off made them rusty, because the other three teams with byes completely rolled over the wild card weekend teams they faced. And all this without mentioning Nate Kaeding, whom I have a personal hex on going back to 2004. Kaeding was brutal yesterday for the Chargers. In a low scoring game, you simply cannot give away points.
