Terriers Lose At Maine, 3-2

What to say, what to say...

BU is in a rough patch right now.  In fact, it's the worst stretch for BU since December of 2007.  We'll get into that in a minute.

First, let's get you the game recaps from GoTerriers, USCHO, Hockey East Online and WTBU Sports.  Also, feel free to check out the (ugly) box score from tonight's (ugly) loss.

Let's get to some analysis....

It Ain't Pretty

Remember that hideous game on December 1, 2007?  The Terriers went on the road to Boston College (the ice didn't melt this time) and the bloodbath began.  Nathan Gerbe turned BU power plays into BC breakaways, scoring two shorthanded goals and recording a hat trick on He Who Must Not Be Named en route to a 6-2 Newton University slaughter.  Later in that game, He Who Must Not Be Named was pulled from the game due to lack of ability to save anything anywhere near the net in favor of Karson Gillespie.  Gillespie mouthed off to the official, and was sent to the penalty box.  He didn't fit through the door for about five minutes.  They rubbed some grease on him, and squeezed him, full pads and all, into the sin bin to watch the rest of the game.  He Who Must Not Be Named had to come in and play out the final, embarassing 3:30 of the loss.  That was the first loss of three in a row for Boston U, culminating with a 4-3 home loss to UMass Lowell.

That was the last time BU lost three in a row.

Why It's Not That Bad

Unlike 2007-08, the Terriers have a more than compotent goalie in net.  Kieran Millan has not played poorly by any stretch of the imagination, posting a 2.75 GAA in 7 games so far this season.  A solid goalie can go a long way toward righting the ship of a struggling team.  Add to that the fact that Millan has a pretty solid defense playing in front of him, and you realize that the Terriers are not quite as bad as they have been playing recently.

The Bright Spot

Alex Chiasson.  The freshman has had a great start to his first year in the NCAA, scoring 4 goals and assisting on another through seven games.  He also had another goal waved off in the game tonight against Maine.  Chiasson has played with poise and flair well beyond his years.  He has shown BU fans that he has a tremendous offensive ability, and should score plenty of goals for BU for as long as he wants to stay here.

Connolly on the Board

It took him seven games, but Chris Connolly finally scored his first goal of the year on Sunday night against Maine.  His goal came on the power play with 7 minutes to play in the game, bringing the Terriers within a goal of tying the Black Bears.
