Stick A Fork In 'Em

Terriers Are Done

UVM sank BU for the second time this weekend at The Gutterson Field House in Burlington.  This time, it was a closer margin, as the Catamounts finished the sweep with a 3-2 victory.

After the game, however, it wasn't all gloom and doom for Jack Parker, who spoke to USCHO.

“I like the way my team played tonight an awful lot.  I thought we played hard, I thought we played pretty smart for the most part. We didn’t get what we wanted to get out of the game as far as the ‘W,’ but we were back on track as far as the way we’re supposed to be playing hockey.”

Well Jackie, the bad news is that your team now sits firmly in fifth place, and is just a slim two points ahead of the ninth place Minutemen of UMass Amherst.  Going into the final weekend of play, it is still possible for the Terriers to earn home ice, but still just as likely that they could miss the Hockey East playoffs entirely.

We'll break down the playoff scenarios later on this week.

However, for my money, the Ice Dogs didn't show enough fight this weekend.  They came out flat against Providence last week, and with home ice still somehow in their own hands, they fell flat on their face in Vermont this time around.

The Terriers went on four power plays on Sunday, but came out with just two shots on goal.  Meanwhile, despite giving up just three man advantages to UVM, BU managed to cough up two goals in that time.  On the first two UVM man-ups, it took just 39 and 31 seconds for the Cats to bury a goal, each time on their first shot on goal.

Colby Cohen and Luke Popko scored for the Ice Dogs while Kieran Millan made just 17 saves.

In my mind, even if BU does make the playoffs, they're not going anywhere past the first round.  They have proven time and time again that they are a lazy and somewhat arrogant team, and they haven't come to play against teams they seem to believe are beneath them.

The only encouraging thing for the Terriers is that they have come to play in big games, such as Fenway Park and the Beanpot.

Nonetheless, I don't think this team truly deserves a chance to play beyond next weekend.  You've got to want it to win it, and they don't seem to want it.
