Terriers 5 -- Black Bears 2
BU capped off an outstanding four point weekend with a huge win over the University of Maine at Agganis on Saturday night. Before we get to a few quicker than usual thoughts (since we will be breaking down individual elements of this weekend more carefully all week), be sure to check out the video highlights from this one. Also, head over to GoTerriers and peruse the box score.
Now some thoughts.
- The goaltending was much better for the Terriers on Saturday than it was on Friday, as Kieran Millan held Maine to just two goals. And Parker didn't even have to yank him in favor of Adam Kraus! He stopped 28 of 30 Black Bear offerings, including some great saves late in the contest. Much better than his 18/22 effort on Friday.
The win pushes Kieran's hot streak to 8 wins in his last 10 starts, and evens his overall record at 11-11 overall. That's right, he had three wins at Christmas.
- The refs couldn't seem to swallow their whistles, calling 20 penalties total last night, 13 of them on Maine. To be honest, the officiating was slanted a bit in favor of the Terriers. I don't feel too bad, because Maine was the beneficiary of some bogus calls on Friday. It all evens out. It did have an impact on the game, as BU capitalized with 2 power play goals, and the Black Bears could never really get into a rhythm.
- Maine's power play went just 1 for 4 for the second consecutive night. The best power play in the nation took a bit of a hit this weekend, falling from 30.2% down to 29.7%. More impressive even than BU's penalty killing was their discipline to avoid being down a man to begin with. BU gave up fewer man advantages all weekend (8) than Maine did on Saturday (9).
- Nick Bonino extended his point-scoring streak to 9 games with his 8th goal of the season. Bonino leads the Terriers with 27 points, and is now 5 points shy of his collegiate high of 32 points, which he reached last season.
- Eric Gryba scored his 3rd goal of the year, which doesn't seem like a big deal. But it is. In his freshman year, he had 1. In his sophomore year, he had one. Last season he had a goose egg. That means that coming into this, his final season in Scarlet, Gryba had a grand total of 2 career goals. With three this season, he has 5. His 9 points in 2009-2010 is also a career high. Gryba had a career total of 12 points coming into the year.
- BU improved to 8-10-3 when out-shooting their opponent (36-30 shots). They have only taken fewer shots than the bad guys six times this season, but ironically, they are 5-1 in those games.
