Rounding Up The 18 Point Weekend That Was

Who Got What?

By now, you know that the Terriers secured their first four point weekend of the season with a sweep over the Black Bears.  But what else went down in the conference?

Merrimack (3 Points) at Vermont (1 Point)

With the Warriors spending the entire weekend in Burlington, it seemed unlikely that they would escape with even a point.  But my oh my, did those scrappy little Warriors impress.

On Friday, the teams skated on even ice for most of the night, with Vermont taking a lead early in the third.  They would hold this lead until 4:20 left to play in regulation, when the Flying Frenchman Stephane Da Costa knocked home the game tying goal.  That contest would end right there, deadlocked at 2 goals apiece.

Saturday was even worse for the Catamounts.  Once again, the teams skated at a 1-1 tie into the third, and once again Vermont took a lead about five minutes into the final frame.  They would carry that lead all the way until the 18:12 mark of the period, just after Mark Dennehy yanked his goalie for the extra skater.  Jesse Todd of Mack scored to tie it up.  But there would be no overtime on this night.

Instead, Frenchie did it once again, this time for the win.  Just 19 seconds after Merrimack tied the game at 2, Da Costa made his 13th goal of the season very lucky for the Warriors, propelling them to the win over hard luck loser Rob Madore and the free-falling Catamounts.  Merrimack 3 -- Vermont 2.  Un-real.

Boston College (2 Points) vs UMass Lowell (2 Points)

In a home and home weekend series, each team took advantage of familiar surroundings.

The weekend began in Lowell on Friday night, and the Riverhawks made the Eagles wish they hadn't made the trip.  UML won the game 4-1, but two of them came in the final 30 seconds with John Muse watching from the bench.  Nonetheless, a win is a win, and UML snapped BC's 4 game winning streak at Tsongas.

The Eagles would answer at the Hellhole on the Hill on Saturday, edging Lowell 2-1 with a cardiac win at Conte.  Chris Kreider, who apparently learned how to shoot and score at World Juniors, tallied the game winner with 13.8 seconds to play to crush the Hawk's hopes of a 4 point weekend.

Northeastern (4 Points) vs UMass Amherst (0 Points)

The Huskies did their part to make the Hockey East picture even more muddled when they took apart the Minutemen on consecutive nights.  Frosh Chris Rawlings led the way for the Huntington Avenuers with two solid performances in a row, as the Huskies bested the Minutemen 2-0 on Friday and ripped them 6-3 on Saturday.  That makes four wins in a row for NU.

New Hampshire (2 Points) vs Providence (0 Points)

The Cats had their way with the Friars on Friday night, winning 5-2.  No surprises here.
