Third Period Reactions -- BU 7 -- ME 4

That'll do it at Agganis.  A big 7-4 win for the Terriers, despite some holes in their game.

Here are some thoughts on the third period of the game.

-- Maine coach Tim Whitehead yanked goaltender Scott Darling to start the third period.  Darling never looked quite right in this game, getting beat badly on Gaudet's second goal and Bonino's.  So much for the unbeatable Scott Darling and the unstoppable Maine power play.

-- Six minutes into the final frame this gritty Maine team clawed to within one.  There was a scrum around the net, Chris Connolly went flying into the boards, Max Nicastro got tied up in front of the net, and Colby Cohen was caught in no-mans land off to the side.  Defenseman Jeff Dimmen made Millan look a bit silly for the 3rd Maine tally.

-- Freshman goalie Shawn Sirman looked out of sorts two times in about a minute span, allowing the Terriers to open it up big time.  Zach Cohen punched home a rebound in the crease that the youngster never seemed to see for the 5th goal.  About 30 seconds later, the Terriers earned an offensive zone draw that cycled to Colby Cohen.  Instead of his usual nuclear bomb of a shot, he just pushed it at half speed to the net.  Once again, Sirman never saw it thanks to a screen.  The puck found an empty corner of the net and put BU up 6-3.

-- You have to wonder if Whitehead regretted his decision to pull Darling after Maine pulled to within one goal.  You want your best goalie on the ice in that situation, and Shawn Sirman is clearly not that player.  With Darling on the ice, Maine has a chance to stay in this one and make a comeback.  Without him, that effort goes from a hike to a mountain climb.

-- When the book closes on this game, it will be another full scoresheet for Colby Cohen, but I'm not convinced he's healthy.  He has a nose for the net, but he was clearly bothered by his hip tonight, and it slowed him down considerably in this game.

-- The tough night for Frosh Shawn Sirman got a lot tougher with 9:01 to play in the game.  David Warsofsky sprinted off the bench to join the play late and pick up a stray puck at the blue line.  He ripped a slapshot top shelf over Sirman's left shoulder to make it a BU Football 7-3 lead.  After the play Corey Trivino was knocked off balance and upended, kicking Sirman in the head.  4 shots and 3 goals after he pulled his starter, Tim Whitehead's questionable decision came to an end as he was forced to putt Scott Darling back between the pipes.

-- Justin Courtnall quietly skated well tonight, pushing hard into the offensive zone on the forecheck.  His efforts may not get him a point, but they very well may get him a pawprint.

-- Millan's early hot play deteriorated as the game went on, and his blueliners didn't do a whole lot to help him late in the game either.  After a very ugly Max Nicastro turnover right in front of the net, Robby Dee mirrored Warsofky's goal, roofing one over Millan's right shoulder.  That was the final straw for Jack Parker who yanked his starter from the game.  He said earlier this week that he hadn't decided who would start Saturday.  Kieran Millan may have taken himself out of the running tonight.

-- We had an Adam Kraus sighting at Agganis Arena tonight, his first regular season action in over two years.  He entered in a low-pressure situation, but it was still a chance for him to prove that he remembers how to play hockey.  He made a nice save on the power play on a long shot, and he seemed more comfortable than he had in the past.  That being said, it was a 7-4 game when he came in.

-- Definitely a positive night offensively for BU, especially for the Pereiera and Gaudet line, but the win also raised some serious questions about the defense as well as the goaltending.  There are concerns about Millan and Colby Cohen going into tomorrow night, but overall, any night that you score seven goals and get two points over the hottest team in the league is a good night.

That does it for tonight, with BU Football making an appearance at Agganis Arena.  BU wins 7-4, with the second game of the two game set tomorrow night.
