Second Period Reactions -- BU 4 -- ME 2

After two periods of play, the Terriers lead 4-2.

Here are some reactions from the second period.

--Colby had a bad turnover early in the period leading to a good chance for sophomore forward Theo Anderson.  He really just gift wrapped it to him.  I am becoming increasingly convinced that Colby's injury is severely limiting him tonight.  It seems like a matter of time before he has a very costly miscue tonight.

-- Ross Gaudet's second goal of the night was much more thanks to his own nice play.  After receiving a pass along the left wing, Gaudet snuck by D-Man Mark Nemec and really turned on the afterburner to get down near the Maine goal line.  Ross absolutely ripped a quick shot on net that used its eyes to find a clear path through Scott Darling's pads.  Even better news?  Joey Pereiera was right on top of the play just in case there was a rebound to be had.

-- It's really hard to overstate the impact of the Periera -- Gaudet -- Trivino line tonight.  They're all skating extremely well and they're getting their hands dirty on every shift.  They've been rewarded with two Terrier goals, and have been giving Maine skaters fits by putting a ton of pressure on the forecheck.

-- After the Vinny Saponari "cross-checking" penalty about 8:40 in followed up immediately on a call for hooking on Luke Popko just 20 seconds later to put Maine on the Two Man Advantage, it really seemed like the Terriers were getting hosed.  The officials are really calling Terriers' skaters for minimal infractions, and The Black Bears were the beneficiary with a 1:39 five on three.

That being said, the Terriers penalty kill unit did an excellent job on the PK, obviously toning back the aggressiveness to combat the two man disadvantage.  The skaters remained calm, reflecting the demeanor of their goalie, who was able to smother several Maine offerings over the 100 second five on three.  BU did a great job keeping Maine's high-octane power play off the board and maintaining a two-goal lead.

-- Maine's first goal came very soon after the 5 on 3 expired, as BU allowed Maine's fourth line to push one through.  Kieran Millan mis-handled a high shot, allowing a rebound to fly out in front to little Joey Diamond who knocked it home.

-- Credit the refs with allowing Maine to tie the game at 2.  David Warsofsky was whistled for another questionable call, which he argued on his way off the ice.  Almost immediately, Maine tossed a puck on net, and despite Millan's best efforts the BU defenders were out-skated and the heralded Maine power play, after getting 4 chances, all on judgement calls, finally cashed in.

-- The Terriers have no glass-jaw tonight.  Despite playing to role of victim to several bad calls, BU bounced back late in the second.  Vinny Saponari seemed to make it his personal mission to get vengeance on the officials for the tic-tac call they made on him for cross-checking.  Sap was able to draw a penalty on Maine captain Tanner House by skating hard through the neutral zone and taking the trip.  Then on the power play Sap buried a Chris Connolly rebound to allow BU to re-gain the lead.

-- Pereira to Nicastro to Bonino put the Terriers ahead 4-2 with just over a minute to play in the period.  Bonino finished off the play with a nifty move to beat Darling for the goal, but once again credit Pereira with setting up the play.  This has been one of Joey P's best efforts of the season, and maybe even his career.

-- What an excellent bounce back effort for BU in the second period.  They were called for some penalties that they clearly disagreed with, and after Maine scored two goals as a result, BU seemed to actively seek vengeance for the tough calls.  They turned it into offense and re-gained their two goal lead.

--The physical play ramped up a ton in that period.  More penalties, more hits, more goals.  We should be in for an exciting third period.
